The Four Aims of Life with Kalidas Hansen

In this enlightening episode of Jyotish, a Vedic astrology podcast, I speak with Kalidas Hansen, a Vedic astrologer from the Ananda spiritual community in Nevada City. Kalidas shares profound insights about how the astrological housing system can serve as a spiritual roadmap for personal development and liberation.

The Astrologer’s Journey

Kalidas discovered astrology during his Saturn return at age 29, after already being established at Ananda as a yogi and family man. His transformation began when receiving a couple’s reading and later his son’s chart reading from his teacher, Drupada. The experience illuminated how astrology could provide “a more expansive perspective” beyond the ego-driven limitations we all face.

However, Kalidas emphasises an important warning from his teacher: astrologers in India are considered “cursed” for two reasons – they think they know more than they do, and they try to control life instead of surrendering to divine will. This is why combining astrology with yoga practice is essential, maintaining humility and the understanding that true masters who have transcended karma can see far more than any chart reader.

The First Six Houses: A Spiritual Framework

First House – Personal Dharma (Character Development)

The ascendant or lagna represents your relationship with yourself and character development. As Kalidas explains, this is about becoming “somebody who you enjoy being.” The highest expression involves recognising that God must work through us to achieve greatness, while the shadow side leads to ego-driven pride and stress.

Second House – Artha (Security and Wealth)

This house reveals where you seek security, which isn’t always material wealth. Kalidas notes that many spiritual seekers have their second house lord in spiritual houses, indicating they’ve already learned that “seeking God is their security.” The placement shows whether someone will find security through relationships, service, health, or other areas of life.

Third House – Kama (Desire and Will)

Known as the “sensory mind,” this house governs our basic desires and free will. Third house people are “free birds” who want to make their own hours and resist authority. The key is learning to balance personal will with divine will, asking “How should I use my free will?” rather than simply asserting independence.

Kalidas shares personally having Ketu (south node) in his third house, which initially led to conflicts with bosses but now helps him practice surrender in service roles.

Fourth House – Moksha (Emotional Mind and Inner Home)

This first liberation house deals with mother, home, and family – areas that can bring our greatest joys and deepest challenges. The key insight is developing an “inner home” through positive thinking and seeing all humanity as family. Kalidas shares a powerful story about working in an Italian restaurant, where he learned to love and serve people whose lifestyle he initially judged.

Fifth House – Creative Dharma (Discriminative Mind)

The house of creativity, children, and counselling requires what Kalidas calls the “discriminative mind” – the ability to be present and intuitive. Whether parenting, creating art, or counselling others, this house demands letting go of past failures and future anxieties to access divine guidance in the present moment.

Sixth House – Service and Healing (Self-Improvement)

This house combines service and healing in a powerful way. Kalidas explains that the best healers are often those who have been deeply wounded and healed themselves – like alcoholics who help others in AA, or physical therapists who overcame their own injuries. The key insight: “If you want to know how to heal, go and serve.”

Key Spiritual Insights

Throughout the discussion, several profound principles emerge:

  • Surrender over Control: The constant theme is learning that we’re not in control of life, and that attempting control creates suffering and karmic bondage.
  • Present Moment Awareness: True spiritual practice requires entering presence and letting go of mental chatter about past and future.
  • Service as Liberation: Each house offers opportunities for liberation through selfless service and expanding our love beyond personal boundaries.
  • Integration of Opposites: Each house has an opposite that must be balanced – personal will with surrender, individual family with universal family, personal security with divine trust.

The Bigger Picture

What makes this approach to astrology unique is its integration with yogic philosophy. Rather than using charts for prediction or control, Kalidas advocates using them for understanding our blind spots and karmic patterns, always maintaining humility and reliance on divine guidance.

As he beautifully summarises, the highest love of self isn’t self-indulgence but becoming “a presence in this world that blesses others and therefore sees your own existence as useful.”

This podcast offers a refreshing perspective on astrology as a tool for spiritual growth rather than fortune-telling, emphasising surrender, service, and the cultivation of divine love as the path to true freedom.

This discussion covers the first six houses, with plans to explore houses 7-12 in a future episode.
