Mercury Retrograde: What It Means and How to Work With It

mercury retrograde

Mercury retrograde happens several times a year, and there’s always a lot of fuss about it.

It certainly has its effects, but it’s not usually a major life-changing influence on its own. Slower planets like Saturn or Jupiter tend to mark bigger turning points. Mercury retrograde is more about the everyday rhythm of life.

Mercury governs communication, business, technology, travel, and the workings of the mind. Because these areas play such a large part in our outward, busy lives, we tend to feel Mercury retrograde quite noticeably.

When a planet is retrograde, it appears to slow down and move backward from our perspective on Earth. In reality, it isn’t reversing direction — but the symbolism is important. Retrograde periods often signal review, revision, and reconsideration.

Common experiences during Mercury retrograde include:

  • Delays and frustrations
  • Misunderstandings in personal or business relationships
  • Technology glitches
  • Confusion in communication
  • Scheduling mix-ups
  • People changing their minds
  • Impulsive decisions that later need correcting

It can feel as though things are moving through treacle.

Because of this, it’s generally wise during Mercury retrograde to:

  • Double-check details
  • Read contracts carefully
  • Pause before making major financial decisions
  • Avoid rushing launches or big announcements
  • Be mindful of how you speak
  • Allow extra time for travel

That said, Mercury retrograde is not something to fear. It is not a curse. It is a period that asks us to slow down and refine.

Sometimes Mercury retrograde is more intense than usual — particularly if Mercury is under pressure from Saturn (bringing heaviness, anxiety, or delay) or Mars (bringing haste or irritation), or if it is closely aligned with the Sun. During those periods, frustration and impatience can run higher.

Collectively, this can show up as heightened tension in communication, stronger opinions, and less willingness to listen.

The key during any Mercury retrograde period is steadiness.

Stay calm.
Speak carefully.
Move a little more slowly.
Expect revisions.

Whatever confusion arises will pass. Retrogrades are temporary by nature. Use the time to review, refine, and reconsider rather than push aggressively forward.

Breathe. Meditate. Smile. Stay even-minded, and avoid getting pulled into unnecessary drama.
