Relationships and Vedic Astrology
Relationships are one of the greatest joys in human life, and also one of the areas which causes the most pain and confusion.
People often come to me with relationship challenges — they can’t find the right person, or there are difficulties in their relationship or marriage. You might keep attracting the same kind of person… or meet someone, it feels strong, and then it fades. Or you feel ready for a relationship, but nothing is happening at all.
How can we use astrology to understand our experience of relationships? What kind of partner are we likely to attract? When will Mr or Ms Right appear? And how can we better understand our wife or husband? These are some of the questions that I get asked.
So let’s take a dive into how astrology can help you to find meaning and joy in your relationships.
Relationships in your birth chart
In Vedic astrology, relationships are represented by many factors, but the most important element is the 7th house. The 1st house is the self (me) and the 7th house is directly opposite and so it represents the other.
The way we experience relationships often reflects what’s happening inside us — our expectations, fears, and emotional patterns.
When we are more balanced, relationships tend to feel smoother. When we are unsettled, that often shows up in our connections with others.
Relationships aren’t easy. Divorce rates are high, and many people feel uncertain or unsettled in their love life. This reflects a deeper inner unrest that many of us carry. When the inner world is not at peace, the outer world tends to mirror that.
Through astrology, we can begin to understand our relationship patterns, find clarity, and ultimately solve these problems so we can experience greater harmony.
The Elements – Working with your partner
Your partner will often carry qualities that feel different to your own. The old saying “opposites attract” is definitely supported by astrology, although of course there will always be some common ground too.
One way to understand this is through the elements. If you have a water ascendant, such as Scorpio, you may be more emotional, intuitive, and inward. You might then be drawn to someone with stronger Earth qualities: grounded, steady, and practical.
When we understand this, it becomes easier to meet each other where we are. The water person may benefit from becoming a little more grounded: doing practical things together, spending time in nature, creating stability. The Earth person may be invited to go deeper emotionally, sharing feelings, exploring meaning, and connecting more inwardly.
If there is a strong fire influence in the chart, there can be independence, passion, and creativity. This brings energy and excitement into relationships, but can also lead to conflict if it is not balanced. Fire types may attract air types, who bring lightness, communication, and social connection. In turn, the fire person can help the air person develop focus, courage, and inner strength.
When we start to see these dynamics, relationships begin to make more sense. You might feel ready for a relationship, but nothing is happening. Or you meet someone, things feel strong, and then it fades. Astrology doesn’t remove these experiences, but it can help you understand why these patterns occur — and how to work with them more consciously.
Most relationship tension comes from trying to get the other person to be more like us. If we can step into their energy and learn what makes them feel happy and loved, that is when relationships can thrive.
Relationships and Vedic Astrology – the 7th house
The 7th house is the key house to analyse when assessing relationships. This will show us how a person experiences relationships, what kind of person they might marry, and how they relate to others.
Let’s take a look at some examples of how planets in the seventh house might operate.
If we have a strong Jupiter in the 7th house, it is likely we will have positive experiences around relationships. Partners may bring growth, wisdom, and opportunity into our lives.
If Jupiter is weak or afflicted, difficulties can arise. There may be differences in values or beliefs, or the partner may be overly opinionated or dogmatic.
If Mercury is strong in the 7th, the spouse may be communicative, intelligent, and youthful. Communication flows easily, and problems can be talked through.
If Mercury is weak or afflicted, then communication becomes a challenge. There may be misunderstandings, overthinking, or avoidance, which can create frustration over time.
Whichever planet is placed in the 7th brings its own qualities, and the strength of that planet will show whether the results are more harmonious or challenging.
If the 7th house is strong, we tend to enjoy the fruits of our past karma in relationships. But usually in people’s charts, there is some level of challenge in the 7th house, because relationships are one of the main ways that we grow in life.
We also must pay special attention to the 7th Lord and which house he sits in, as this will give essential information about the relationships and spouse.
Relationships and Vedic Astrology – Venus
Venus is the main significator (karaka) for relationships. Wherever Venus is placed in your chart gives important clues about how you love, what you are attracted to, and how you connect with others.
A strong Venus tends to give a natural ability to love, attract, and enjoy relationships. There is often warmth, charm, and a desire for connection. When Venus is weak or afflicted, there can be difficulties with connection, self-worth, or attracting the kind of partner you truly want.
The sign Venus is placed in shows the style of love.
For example, Venus in Aries may give a more direct, passionate, and impulsive approach to relationships. This person may take initiative, fall quickly, and value excitement and independence.
Venus in Taurus is more steady, sensual, and loyal. There is a desire for stability, comfort, and long-term connection. These people often show love through consistency and physical presence.
Venus in Gemini brings a more playful and communicative style. There is a need for conversation, variety, and mental stimulation. If this is missing, the relationship can start to feel dull.
Dashas
Dashas show the period of life you are in. Each planetary period brings a different focus, energy, and set of experiences. Some periods naturally support relationships, while others turn your attention elsewhere.
For example, during a Venus dasha, relationships often become more prominent. There may be more desire for connection, more opportunities to meet someone, or a relationship may deepen or become more meaningful.
During a Saturn dasha, relationships can feel slower or more serious. There may be delays, tests, or a sense that things are not moving as easily as you would like. At the same time, this period can bring more mature and long-lasting connections — but it often requires patience and commitment.
During a Rahu dasha, relationships can feel intense, unfamiliar, or unpredictable. You may be drawn to people who are very different from you, or find yourself in situations that feel exciting but also confusing.
Of course it depends where the planets are placed in your chart and which houses they rule to know how each planetary period will play out relative to relationships.
Understanding your dasha helps you see what phase of life you are in, and what that phase is asking of you. Sometimes it is a fruitful time for relationships, and sometimes it is a time to focus on other things or even to go through some relationships challenges, so we can learn and grow.
Transits
Transits show what is happening right now in the sky, and how that is interacting with your birth chart.
There are times when transits activate relationship areas of the chart, and things begin to move — you meet someone, a relationship develops, or an existing connection deepens.
For example, if Jupiter is transiting your 7th house or aspecting it, this can bring opportunities for growth in relationships. You may meet someone new, or experience more ease and support in your current relationship.
If Saturn is transiting the 7th house, relationships may feel heavier or more demanding. There can be a sense of distance, responsibility, or needing to work through issues more consciously. This is not necessarily negative, but it often requires more effort and honesty.
At times, everything seems to happen at once — meeting someone, things moving quickly, major changes — and this often coincides with supportive transits activating key parts of the chart. At other times, not much is moving at all, even if you feel ready. Understanding the transits helps you understand what kind of period you are in and if it is supportive for connection and intimacy.
When will I get married? (Advanced)
This is a little advanced, so I will keep it brief, but I want to share so you can see how accurate this is.
Marriage tends to occur during periods particularly connected to the 7th house, 12th house, Venus, Rahu, and any exalted planet.
- The 7th house is the house of relationship
- The 12th house is the house of the bedroom (sex traditionally comes after marriage)
- Venus is the planet of relationship
- Rahu is the significator of material desires
- Exalted planets bring material blessings
When dashas or transits activate multiple key points in the chart, marriage becomes likely.
My marriage was in Venus-Mercury dasha.
- Venus is the 7th lord in my chart
- Venus is Venus (the significator of marriage)
- Mercury is associated with 7th Lord Venus in my chart
- By transit, Venus and Mercury were together in the 9th house of fortune.
My wife got married in her Rahu-Ketu-Jupiter dasha
- Rahu is in her 7th house of relationships natally
- Rahu is Rahu, significator of fulfilling desires
- Ketu is in her 1st house (opposite 7th)
- Jupiter is her 7th lord in the 7th house
- By transit, Rahu and Jupiter were associated in the 12th house!
So we were both in periods strongly indicating marriage. So if you are wondering when you might get married, look for dashas and transits connecting these planets and houses.
Relationships and Vedic astrology – Final thoughts
Relationships are not always easy. They can bring great joy, but also deep challenges.
Vedic astrology does not remove those challenges, but it helps you to understand them. And that understanding can change how you experience them.
And when you begin to understand your patterns — your needs, your timing, your tendencies — you can approach relationships with more clarity, patience, and compassion.
